The Pokémon Company, simply known as Pokémon, is a Japanese company responsible for the brand management, production, publishing, marketing, and licensing of the Pokémon franchise, which consists of video games, a collectible card game, anime television series, films, manga, and other merchandise. It was formed as a joint investment by the three companies that hold the copyright and trademark for Pokémon—Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures—to focus on the multimedia franchise, which had become too large for them to manage alone. It was founded in April 1998, initially to operate Pokémon Center stores in Japan, and then expanded to include the entire franchise in October 2000.
