On June 28, 2023, the Chicago Blackhawks team selected Bedard as the overall first player in the 2023 NHL draft. He became the second number one draft pick in the history of the Blackhawks after Patrick Kane in 2007. He is also the second player born in British Columbia to be selected first overall, after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in 2011.
Bedard signed a three-year rookie contract with the Blackhawks on July 17, on the day of his 18th birthday.
He made his NHL debut on October 10, recording his first point for an assist in a 4:2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scored his first NHL goal the next day, October 11, in the opening third of a 1:3 loss to the Boston Bruins. His first two NHL games became the most-watched regular-season hockey games on ESPN and TNT.
